Burn Injury
A burn injury, or locally, a Highlands County
burn injury, can lead to a life of severe pain, lifestyle restrictions, and financial insecurity.
Burn injury is often devastating, and may be
caused by heat, cold, electricity, chemicals, light, radiation, or friction.

Whether at home or at work, a manufacturer which
creates a dangerous and defective product, or a property owner that does not reasonably maintain the property which
results in a fire or burn injury, are examples of parties which can be held accountable for serious burn
injury.
Flammable Household
Products
The consumer products most commonly associated
with fires are bedding, mattress, clothing, and furniture. Children's clothing, including foreign imports
sold at well-known retail stores, have ben found to be flammable. The results are
devastating.
Chemicals at Home or the
Workplace
Many chemicals that can cause moderate to severe
chemical burns are strong acids or bases. Chemical burns are usually caused by caustic chemical compounds,
such as sodium hydroxide, silver nitrate, and more serious compounds (such as sulfuric acid and Nitric
acid).
Hydrofluoric acid can cause damage down to the
bone and its burns are sometimes not immediately evident. Chlorine can also cause internal and external
burns.
If you have suffered chemical burn injuries as
the result of someone else’s negligence, then you should contact an attorney to consider your legal
options.
Electrical Burns
Electrical burn injury is generally caused by an
electric shock, such as exposure to an active overhead power line, an active electrical wire, arcing from
electrical power sources such as generators or transformers.
While the external burns vary and can range from
minor to catastrophic, often the internal injuries are far worse – the external signs of injury may pale in
comparison to the extensive internal injuries. Such injuries may lead to heart irregularities, cardiac
arrest, and unexpected falls with resultant fractures.
If you have suffered electrical burn injuries as
the result of someone else’s negligence, then you should contact an attorney to consider your legal
options.
Radiation burns
Radiation burn injuries can be caused by
protracted and over exposure to UV light (as from the sun), tanning booths, radiation therapy (as patients who are
undergoing cancer therapy), sun lamps, and X-rays.
A common burn associated with radiation is sun
exposure, specifically two wavelengths of light UVA, and UVB, the latter being the more dangerous of the two.
Tanning booths emit these same wavelengths and can cause similar damage to the skin such as irritation, redness,
swelling, and inflammation. More severe cases of sun burn result in what is known as “sun
poisoning.”
Scalding
Scalding is caused by super-heated liquid,
including water, and gases. They most commonly occur in the home from exposure to high temperature tap water.
Steam is a common gas that causes scalds. Broken steam or gas pipes, defective water coolers with hot water
taps, and defective water boilers (e.. heat regulator not working) and plumbing defects can result in scalding
burns.
More damage can be caused if hot liquids enter
an orifice. Deaths have occurred where steam pipes burst, not only from the burns, but also from the
exploding force.
